If you experience difficulty in structuring and developing your body paragraphs, you can always talk to a HELPS Advisor or one of our volunteers. They are always ready to help you if you need assistance at any stage of the writing process. This video will introduce useful advice on how to write a well-developed paragraph. This approach is far mare exciting because it shows that you have a definite point of view, and are prepared to argue it. It shows an examiner that you have planned your essay, know what you are going to say and in all probability will support it with good evidence. Plans should have the flexibility to change as your work develops, but remember to ensure that any adjustments are consistent across the essay. It is best to structure your essay according to key themes. Themes are illustrated and developed through a number of points . Choose relevant points only, ones that most reveal the theme or help to make a convincing and interesting argument. In the main body of the essay every paragraph should demonstrate both knowledge and critical evaluation. While you can have sub-points, the most important thing is that you come up with ONE coherent argument that ties together everything in your essay. In other words, as long as you introduce your topic, argue your case persuasively, and provide some closure, the number of paragraphs is completely irrelevant. At undergraduate level, more so than at A-Level, you will need to demonstrate evidence of further reading. Lectures are supposed to be a pointer and guide for your further reading. By reading, we mean published, peer-reviewed literature; Wikipedia does not count! Each paragraph should have a purpose / theme, and make a number of points - which need to be support by high quality evidence. Be clear why each point is is relevant to the argument. It would be useful at the beginning of each paragraph if you explicitly outlined the theme being discussed (.e.g. cognitive development, social development etc.). You need to be concise, and clearly articulate your argument. A sentence should contain no unnecessary words, a paragraph no unnecessary sentences. You must be ruthless and exclude ideas that don't fit in seamlessly with your essay's focus. Like vases, paragraphs tend to be more narrow in the middle. That’s where you’ll find the specifics of the argument, the quotations and the facts. Daily workshops are delivered throughout semester and target reading, writing, speaking and referencing skills. Carefully note the key theories, information and quotes that will help you to answer all components of the question. Consider grouping these into three or four main themes, including only the most significant points. Ideally the conclusion should summarize the key themes / arguments of your essay. State the take home message â€" don’t sit on the fence, instead weigh up the evidence presented in the essay and make a decision which side of the argument has more support. If there is a word count for your essay try to devote 10% of this to your introduction. When you are writing an evaluation paragraph use the PEC system. It is more appropriate to use original content to demonstrate your understanding.

Essay Punch Online

Essay Punch Online Mastering how to write an essay early on will help you prepare for writing your dissertation in your final year. Taking the time to properly plan an essay can lead to higher grades, with lecturers welcoming a logical structure that clearly demonstrates your understanding of the subject. If it’s a ‘compare and contrast’ kind of question, you’ll need to demonstrate both sides of the argument. Make sure that you read the assignment sheet thoroughly and are sure about what it asks for before you start reading for the essay. While you are reading, bear in mind what sort of material you are looking for in order to address the assigned topic. Even if you do come across a lot of interesting material when researching for your essay, be selective. This means that, when writing your essay, you can progress through these points. It's up to you to decide which essay writing strategy to adopt but pick the one that works best for you. 'Many successful essay writers plan consciously and deliberately, and commit to extensive notes, lists or mind maps,' he says. 'Some - those who work less consciously - may have a very sketchy plan. This does not mean that you should be obscure, or use impossibly long sentences with multisyllabic words, but you should avoid being overly colloquial. Originality is one of the hardest things to achieve in an essay, but any effort you make at being original will be noticed by the marker. This doesn’t mean that you have to invent a new theory each time you write an essay. But there are some points that you should bear in mind. One of these points is that you are writing an academic essay, and as such, are required to use a reasonably formal style of writing. Planning your essay makes the writing process quicker and easier. You'll be able to focus on expressing your ideas while remaining within the word count, rather than having to organise your thoughts as you write, which often leads to waffling. We've asked two academic experts for their recommendations on how to plan and write a first-class essay. 'This can help you to clarify your ideas and also give you something to work towards. Linear plans are useful for essays requiring a rigid structure. They provide a chronological breakdown of the key points you're going to address. Imagine a reader, then try to predict their objections to your argument, and then demonstrate why they are wrong. A well-structured essay should consist of a series of paragraphs that progress logically through the series of points that you intend to cover. Obviously, the difficult part is working out what that order should be. In essence, an essay is an argument, so your structure should be based on the particulars of your argument. Although this may sound obvious, a lot of essays lose marks for containing material that is simply irrelevant. Interesting material won’t gain you extra marks unless it is relevant. Good essay writing is a skill acquired rather than learnt. Approaches vary from person to person and will depend on one’s experience in essay writing, almost to the point where a style of writing will be as individual as a signature. Michael recommends that you begin writing your essay by expanding your plan. 'You may find it helpful to write the conclusion first, especially if you know exactly what it is you want to argue,' he adds. Your essay should have a definite ending, in the form of a conclusion. Here you should summarize what it is that you have said in your essay, stating what your answer to the question is and why. Often, there is no simple answer (which is why you are writing an essay, and not a two-mark answer on a class test), so you should state what the complexities of the issue are. You may feel that you are repeating yourself, as the body of your essay should have made your argument clear already, but the reader will appreciate a good summary. Remember that good essays don’t just give evidence for their point of view, but also demonstrate why opposing views are flawed.

Essay Writing Tips

Essay Writing Tips The primary topic of a paragraph may be expressed in a topic sentence. The main topic of an essay, report, or speech may be expressed in a thesis sentence. If so, allow yourself a little more time after dinner to finish writing your essay. The reason that teachers don’t assign a number of pages anymore is because it’s too easy to manipulate pages. Your introduction should build up the interest of the audience, and it should be clear that what is the topic. With the adoption of computers in the classroom, teachers switched from pages to work count because it was too easy for the computers to manipulate the font size and page size. By assigning a word count, teachers get a more accurate length of essay than they would if they assigned homework by pages. Students sometimes in a hurry fail to understand the topic and end up writing on something else. The intro should be very catchy as it will attract the readers and then they can easily get your point. A thesis statement should be placed in the introductory paragraph of your essay. A short essay is very different from long essays. While writing long essays, you have full freedom to express your ideas in a much bigger space. But, in short essay, you may feel that you don’t have much space to make an argument, as you need to be precise with your words. Only put useful arguments and weed out irrelevant ones. But, be alert, never remove the most convincing points or else your essay will lose its purpose. You may be the kind of writer who writes an introduction first in order to explore your own thinking on the topic. If so, remember that you may at a later stage need to compress your introduction. The first thing before you initiate the writing process is reading. You can underline important information or encircle the main question. It may be even more important in the expository paragraph because this is where the main idea of the paragraph is expressed. This topic sentence lets the reader know what the rest of the paragraph will discuss. When you read a textbook, the news, magazine articles, or any other types of publications, you are reading expository writing. When you write answers for an essay test, you use the expository form. Do not expect to come up with a fully formulated thesis statement before you have finished writing the paper. The thesis will inevitably change as you revise and develop your ideasâ€"and that is ok! Start with a tentative thesis and revise as your paper develops. Avoid burying a great thesis statement in the middle of a paragraph or late in the paper. Outlines are a great way to organize your ideas! For most outline essays, full sentences will prove more useful because they allow you to provide more thorough information. Effective thesis statements express the main focus of a paper and state an arguable claim. A thesis should not be more than one sentence in length. It might be a question, a quote, a surprising statistic, or a bold statement emphasizing the relevance of the topic. The introduction is important both to grab the reader’s interest and to inform them of what will be covered in the essay. The introduction generally comprises 10â€"20% of the text. To learnhow to write an essay introduction, start by getting familiar with its most important goals. An essay is a focused piece of writing that develops an argument or narrative based on evidence, analysis and interpretation. Each paragraph should be centered around just one argument or idea. The body of your essay is where you make arguments supporting your thesis statement, provide evidence, and develop your ideas. They are essential when you're writing an essay or other written assignment. They help you plan out your ideas and research prior to writing your final paper. The final sub-point should be your thesis statement. State the idea or argument that you plan to discuss in your essay. Determine whether to use full sentences or brief phrases in your outline. I often fall into the habit of just writing as much as I can, then amending and editing that first push through. Sometimes I don’t like the path I went down so I’ll erase everything and start over.

Critical Essay Writing

Critical Essay Writing Explanation of why the point is important and how it helps with your overall argument. Different fonts and different font sizes will affect the number of pages you write. This is one reason why a teacher may give an assignment length in words instead of pages - page length can be faked by changing the margins and fonts. Publishers like certain genres to be within certain word counts, so any author who hopes to be published has to create their works within these counts. What am I supposed to do if I write 1000 words, but it doesn’t make the number of pages I want? I don’t think I should have to write more words just because mine happen to be shorter than my classmates. We both wrote the same number of words, his are just longer so it takes up more pages. If it’s not something important to you and your writing, you can ignore it. Some of us get marked down points if we do not hit a certain word count or page count. If I’m assigned a paper and it has to be a minimum number of words, I worry about hitting that number. The important thing is that they should be long enough to contain all the above material. Only move onto a new paragraph if you are making a new point. These are the parts of your paragraphs that will get you the higher marks in any marking scheme. It encourages you to develop a formal, disciplined approach to writing that communicates clearly and with authority. It allows you to practise and develop transferable skills that are valuable to you not only while you’re a student but also when you graduate and have to write in a professional role. I wrote an essay of 1550 words and it was barely 4.5 pages . I have a paper with ~2800 words and it is 3 lines past the 4th page. Aye how many words do I have to put if I’m typing a 14 page essay. I agree that there are a lot of people who are overly concerned with word count, but there are legitimate reasons to keep it in mind as well. That means people who write long words have an advantage even though long words aren’t always good to use. Just because an estimate won’t be exactly right doesn’t mean it isn’t useful. For those who are looking for a basic rough idea, this is helpful. Using storytelling in educational settings can enable educators to connect with their students because of inborn tendencies for humans to listen to stories. Academic paragraphs are usually between 200 and 300 words long . I only need to write 250 words and you don’t have how many pages that is on your list. If you are given a writing assignment with a page number, the best thing to do is go directly to the person who made the assignment and ask for a word count. This will take away all the variations and help ensure your writing assignment meets expectations. Do you know what fonts have the widest spacing so that they fill up the page more quickly? I need to find a wide font so I don’t have to write as many words to fill up the pages on my assignment. If you can send me in the direction of the best wide font to do this, that would be great. Depending on the genre of book you are writing, word count can be critical in whether or not your writing can actually be published. I have a writing assignment in school, and it is always helpful to know how many pages I will need. I think that since teachers don’t give page assignments but only word count assignments, it’s difficult to imagine how many pages that will be. I write longer words than most, so most of my pages have less words than the estimates on this page. You should change them so they are more accurate for people who use longer vocabulary words.

The Prototype Model of Interpersonal Communication Essay

If I am asked what comes to my mind when one mentions interpersonal communication, I will think of several points, some of which I will try to explain here. The first and perhaps the most important element of my prototype of interpersonal communication is ongoing development. What it means by ongoing development is that interpersonal communication requires interactants to build a relationship between them and this can only be done over a long period of time, through a relatively high frequency of interactions. Thus, without gradual developments, one cannot expect to have an interpersonal relationship with others, because to get to that level, efforts and time—which both are the foundations of ongoing development—are very necessary. Our†¦show more content†¦These kinds of communications are usually typical, not distinctive. No matter where we go to buy our groceries, our interactions tend to follow a similar, repetitive pattern: greeting, small talk with a little smile, and parting. In interpersonal communication, however, the interactions are different. In an interpersonal level, everyone is recognized as a unique individual (Miller and Steinberg, 1975; Beebe, Beebe, and Redmond, 2002). The type of interaction we have with one person tends to be different from the interaction we have with another person and, therefore, each individual becomes irreplaceable (Wood, 2010). To illustrate this, I will give an example from my personal experience. I have two best friends: Benny and Reza. I first knew Benny in my second year of high school and we have been friends ever since. We do many things together, help each other, and share ideas as well as concerns about various issues. I know exactly where he will go if he says he wants to go fishing. I know his concern about a high rate of unemployment, and his fluctuational romantic relationship with his girlfriend. Reza, on the other hand, is a friend I met in my undergraduate years. We both share the same interest in philos ophy and religious matters. We discuss and debate about many issues. Shakespeares character Juliet Essay Example For Students

Shakespeares character Juliet Essay Paragraph I (Juliet)Romeo and Juliet both grew up in haughty, first class households, where they were provided with everything they wanted and needed, not to mention a broad education including proper etiquettes. Juliet is a very courageous and loyal person to Romeo, for she not only stands up to her parents, but to systematic way of life that has existed for hundreds of years (arranged marriages). Shes tells her mother immediately at the ball that she will only meet Paris because she wants her to and not because she is voluntarily interested in him: Ill look to like, if looking liking move. But no more deep will I endart mine eyeThan your consent gives strength to make it fly. (1,iii,98-100)Romeo on the other hand shows courage, but not the same kind. He has a loving relationship with his father, and his courage is shown by him perusing his love for Juliet, knowing the consequences of associating with a Capulet. Since men could marry whoever they wanted, I wouldnt call him courageous. Juliet also qualifies as devoted, after the nurse tells her that she should just go ahead and marry Paris, she says she will kill herself if she is forced to marry Paris. She would rather take her own life than to have a life without Romeo:Ancient damnation! Oh, most wicked fiend! Is it more sin to wish me thus forsworn,Or to dispraise my lord with that same tongueWhich she hath praised him above compareSo many thousand times? Go, counselor. Thou and my bosom henceforth shall be twain. Ill to the Friar, to know his remedy. If all else fail, myself have power to die. (3,v,235-242)Juliet has already heard the nurses advice, she will talk to the friar, and if he doesnt tell her what she wants to hear, she will kill herself.

Rethinking Orphanges Essays - Child Welfare, Childhood, Family

Rethinking Orphanges Gina Magnanti Economics Edited by Richard B. McKenzie Reviewed by Jim Powell Nowadays, it is considered acceptable to send a young person from a supportive, wealthy family away to a residential boarding school. At the same time it is considered destructive to send a young person from an unsafe, unhealthy home to a nurturing, educational, residential setting. As a result of old orphanage stereotypes in the past, many residential education programs have shut down during the past four or five decades. Most of these stereotypes weren't helped by such examples as shown in Charles Dickens's novel Oliver Twist. Major newsmagazines supported these popular stereotypes with turn-of-the-century pictures of pathetic orphanage residents on their covers. The debate lasted only a few months. The critics claimed victory once again, and nothing was done. The government has failed at taking care of children who find themselves unwanted because their parents have given them up or died. There are now few education-focused, residential settings available for young people, especially adolescents, who don't have homes that can support them nor schools that can effectively teach them. However, there are tens of thousands of children who could benefit from such care. Unwanted children are condemned to constant dependency on individuals who are more concerned with their perks and privileges than with children. The government rewards those who carry out its programs for the number of children they take in, but it doesn't evaluate the quality of care. Children are moved from one program to another each time people dream up some new way to get more funding. This book gives a compelling case that unwanted children are much better cared for in the private sector by orphanages run by churches or other charitable organizations. McKenzie grew up in an orphanage and speaks passionately from his own experience. He is thankful for having had an orphanage provide continuity in his life. The kind of continuance that is lacking in today's government-run foster care system. Children are often sent through the system consisting of foster care homes. McKenzie notes that surveys show the majority of orphans tend to look back on their experiences with gratitude. Rethinking Orphanages for the 21st Century provides the foundation for a real national policy debate. The short-lived, sound-bite-based national policy debate on orphanage care that took place in late 1994 was, regrettably, founded on old orphanage stereotypes. House Speaker Newt Gingrich praised the 1930s movie ?Boys Town?, whereas his critics in the Clinton administration countered with visions of orphanages in London in the late 1800s, as depicted in Charles Dickens's novel Oliver Twist. This edited volume is the first attempt to rethink critical issues relating to the care of disadvantaged young people. One contributor evaluates the current dreadful state of care for many American children. Another contributor evaluates the literature relating to orphanage care and finds much of it to be lacking. Yet another contributor does what the critics have not done- and surveys orphans about how they have done in life and how they look back on their experiences. Unfortunately, the reality of orphanages and the Hollywood portrayals of them was never compared until this.
